Have you outgrown Shopify?

Shopify is very good, and most businesses asking this question have not outgrown it. They have outgrown how it is set up, which is a smaller and much cheaper problem.

This tells you which of those two you are, in about two minutes. You do not need to be technical to answer any of it, and there is nothing here you have to buy.

Whether the platform still fits

Do you need to change how the checkout itself works?
Extra steps, custom fields, quotes instead of payment, approval before an order is accepted.
Do you sell to trade customers on account?
Credit terms, customer-specific prices, order approval, statements.
Is your pricing more complicated than a price per product?
Per customer, per quantity break, per configuration, or calculated from dimensions.
Does your catalogue fit how Shopify wants to describe products?
Variant limits, deep specification data, kits and bundles, made to order.

What you are working around

How many paid apps is the shop relying on?
Count the ones that would break something if you removed them.
Is somebody doing a manual job every week to keep it running?
Re-keying orders, fixing stock, exporting to a spreadsheet, correcting prices.
Does the shop need to talk to your other systems?
Accounts, stock, a warehouse, an ERP, a trade counter till.

What it is costing

What is the platform and its apps costing you a month?
Subscription, apps, and any transaction fees on top.
Is the platform limiting what you can sell or how you sell it?
A channel you cannot open, a market you cannot enter, a product you cannot list.

What happens when it goes wrong

Does the shop cope when you send a big email or run a campaign?
A mailing list going out, a sale launching, a product drop.
Could you take your shop elsewhere if you decided to?
Your product data, your customers, your order history, your theme.
Can anybody safely change the theme?
Whether edits are understood, documented, and survive a theme update.

What this is, and what it is not

This is a starting point for a conversation, not an audit. The questions are weighted by how expensive each thing is to unpick later, and the heaviest weights sit on the limits that do not improve on their own. Most people who take this are told to stay where they are, which is the honest distribution rather than a modest one.

Most of what it recommends costs nothing and does not involve changing developer. If your answers show the project is fine, it says so.
