Publishing Platform Industry Media

RFID News had been dormant for two years. It now publishes most working days and carries a supplier directory, an events calendar and a paid vendor portal.

A trade news site we own and run ourselves, rebuilt as a publishing platform: 384 articles, 56 suppliers listed, subscriptions taken through Stripe, and a newsroom that finds its own stories.

THE SITUATION

A site with 22 articles on it and nothing published for two years.

RFID News went live in 2022 and then stopped. Twenty two articles, and nothing at all through 2023 or 2024. The reason is the one that kills most publishing projects: gathering the news is a daily job, and a daily job that depends on somebody remembering to do it is a job that eventually does not get done.

The subject was not the problem. RFID and NFC are worth covering, the trade press around them is thin, and the vendors putting out genuinely interesting work were being written about by nobody in the UK. What was missing was a way to keep publishing that did not rely on a person having a free hour every morning.

We had a choice most of our clients face at some point: write the site off, or work out why it stalled and build the thing that stops it stalling again. We took our own advice.

WHAT WE DID

We built the newsroom, not just the website

The first job was sourcing. There is now an automated sweep across three dozen vendor newsrooms, trade titles and press wires, run against a tracker of everything already covered so the same story is never written twice.

On top of WordPress we modified an existing theme to carry the parts a trade publication actually needs: a supplier directory vendors can claim and maintain themselves, with their own login, password reset and file uploads; an events calendar; an academy section; and Stripe subscriptions for paid listings, with the billing, the vendor portal and the login guard all written by us rather than bolted together from plugins.

The publishing side was automated to match. Articles post themselves to LinkedIn through a fork of an existing plugin, images are offloaded to a CDN, a weekly digest goes out to subscribers, and a notifier flags anything that failed to publish rather than leaving a gap nobody sees.

In August 2026 we put the whole thing through a code security audit, ours and inherited alike, because a site taking card payments and holding vendor logins should be audited whether or not anybody is asking us to.

THE RESULT

From dormant to publishing most working days

384
Articles published
325
Of them in 2026 alone
56
Suppliers in the directory
