Xero, Shopify, BigQuery, Python

Client was manually allocating Shopify sales from multiple streams into Xero and lacked visibility on their data

We created a custom integration to Shopify via their API to export customers and invoices into Xero via its API. We also saved the data within a BigQuery database, which the client could then attach to their dashboarding systems.

THE SITUATION

Left manually creating invoices from three sources in Shopify, with time spent on data entry rather than management reporting

The Shopify Xero integration does not allow the multi-channel system that ProgressJJ use, and it also incorrectly reports EU VAT, leaving them with no option other than to manually create invoices in Xero for Shopify orders. A process that was costly and inefficient.

This also meant that they lacked resolution on reporting, with no live dashboarding to allow management decisions to be made.

WHAT WE DID

Wrote a Python application that made a three-way connection between the APIs for Shopify, Xero and BigQuery

One: Created an integration in Python with the Shopify API to extract customers and invoices.

Two: Created a middleware system to cache the data from Shopify.

Three: Integrated with Xero via their API with Python to import customers and invoice information, using a defined map for cost allocation within Xero.

Four: Posted all data from Shopify to BigQuery in a logical, easy-to-use table.

Five: Extracted P&L information from Xero and posted it to Shopify to create a set of custom P&Ls.
